MacGown Art Retreat and Exhibitions

Festivals and Artwalks

It's been a while since I posted here and with Covid still happening, the craziness has continued. Until very recently there were very few opportunities to show our art. But we did get to finally participate in a few festivals and and artwalks starting late last spring and especially within the last couple of months. We did an artwalk in Meridian, the Threefoot Festival in Meridian, Expression Fest, the Prairie Arts Festival, Starkville Sunday Funday, the Starkville Artwalk, the Cotton District Arts Festival, and the Columbus Artwalk.

We have two more Sunday Funday events coming up this Fall on October 31 and November 21 on Sunday afternoons on Lafayette Street in downtown Starkville, MS. We are headed to the Peter Anderson Festival in Ocean Springs from November 6–7! This is a huge festival and hopefully the weather and buyers will be on our side.

Exhibitions

Back in late February through the end of March, Joseph MacGown and I had a really nice exhibition of our art at the Fine Arts Gallery at the Meridian Community College!

I had a small piece entitled EC's Dreamasaur in our Starkville Area Arts Exhibition called "Time on Our Hands" this past summer. This ink on Claybord piece was inspired by my creative stepdaughter, Emma Claire (EC).

Both Joseph and I had work accepted into the Cotton District Juried show, which is still on display through the end of October. Joseph had three cool ceramic pieces accepted and I had two weird pen drawings that made the cut. My "Microverse 1" won first place in the drawing division!

I have a collaborative drawing called "Honeymoon" done with Bernard Dumaine in a show in France up this month! The Exhibition entitled "Un autre Monde" is at the Galerie Art en Valois in Angouleme, France and includes sculptures by Olivier Martin, Lou Henix, and drawings and paintings by Bernard Dumaine, which include some of his collaborations!

Interview with The Mississippi Presenter's Network

The Mississippi Presenter's Network out of Oxford, MS recently did a series of videos about me and my process of making art. Here is the forward they wrote: "Starkville-based artist Joe MacGown doesn't consciously come up with ideas for his work. Instead, MacGown likes to let what he sees happening in the world, be it people, nature, politics, religions, stir around in his mind for a while and come out in its own way through his drawings or paintings. he calls his approach subconscious meandering."

These videos and others can be found on the Mississippi Presenter's Network FaceBook page: https://www.facebook.com/mspresentersnetwork.  Here is a link to one of the videos done about me: https://www.facebook.com/185624931797925/videos/503586114125705.

MacGown Art Retreat concept

Over the last few years, we have been actively trying to create an art complex of sorts at our property in the Sessums Community just outside of Starkville, MS. The work has been slow, but continuous based on time and money! Basically, any art we sell goes to this project. We currently have a functional studio (very packed!), are almost done with a cool rustic art cabin, have started a gallery to show our art and conduct small workshops, my wife Jennifer and I are finishing up an artistically designed house, and our existing house will become an art house where visiting artists can stay or visitors for events may choose to rent the entire home or individual rooms.  The backdrop of the structures is a revamped 3 acre+ pond with a pavilion all surrounded by Black Belt Prairie and Oak Hickory Forest habitat.  We hope to start having small events as soon as the spring of 2022. In the meantime, our studio is open by appointment (art@joemacgown.com).

The Garden of Fernal Delights Launch - May 30th 2015

Great news! As I mentioned in a previous post, I will have three pieces of my art in upcoming book entitled "The Garden of Fernal Delights." The book will include the artwork of 114 international artists! My pieces include "Green Silence", "Gordenobyte", and the illustration for the chapter heading for the "K" section of the book. Cool! The Fernal genesis is the brainchild of Gromyko Semper, and the book concept and design is by Liba W. Stambollion, and it is curated by Liba Stambollion and Gromyko Semper.

Additionally, some of the works will be including in a traveling show that will open at Bash Gallery in San Francisco on May 30th, 2015 and run through June 30th, 2015. After the USA it will move on to Asia. Keep posted for the listing of future shows. The launching exhibit includes 36 of the 114 artists involved in the book project. It is logistically too difficult to exhibit work from the entire Fernal family.  Nonetheless, as the shows unfolds, pieces will sell, new pieces will be added.  It will evolve and even take on new artists from the group.

Guess what! I am one of the 36 artists will have artwork in this show! Way cool. Unfortunately, my piece "Gordenbyte" will not be included in the show because it sold this year at Luminarte Gallery in Dallas, TX at the opening of the LUSO-American Surrealism 2014 exhibition featuring the works various surreal artists from the USA and Portugal. Of course, I am happy to have sold it:) The show will feature these 36 artists as well as video jockeys, musicians, and various performers. A carnival is planned as part of the show! What? Yes. Crazy.

The night of the opening there will be the book launch of the limited edition Encyclopedia of Fernal Affairs. This book is 250 pages and lavishly illustrated and written by the 114 artists. It both co-creates and catalogues the Fernal Garden of Delights. Artists will be present for book signings. I wrote sections about the art I submitted, as did some of the other artists. This book will be awesome. Everyone should buy this book. Seriously. Read more about the Fernal Art project at: http://www.visionaryartexhibition.com/garden-of-fernal-delights.html

Opening Reception for my show at the RAC a done deal

The opening for my show at the Rosenzweig Arts Center (RAC) in Downtown Columbus, MS was last night (August 1st, 2013) from 5:30-7:00 PM. I thought it went really well. Lots of folks showed up. In fact, people starting arriving before 5 PM and some did not leave until about 8 PM. They  basically had to turn the lights off to get us out of there!

The crew at the RAC did a wonderful job with the show. It was hung nicely with some natural flow and certain pieces grouped together in meaningful ways. Lots of good food and wine and even homemade ice-cream with toppings! Cookies, brownies, all sorts of goodies.  They had a video that I had prepared of my work with music composed and performed by my son Joseph playing on a widescreen TV. That was pretty cool. Special thanks to everyone at the RAC, especially Renee Sheridan, who coordinated much of this show! Also thanks a million to Mark Wood, owner of the Chalet, who has helped me with framing and printing for several years now. Without him, I could not have these shows!

I would guess I had at least 75 originals framed and hung, and lots of prints for sale. Sold at least one bigger original and quite a few prints. Hopefully, more will sell throughout the month.

People hanging out
I met some very interesting people at the show, such as Bernie Imes who is a noted photographer; April Wallace, also a photographer; and many others. I finally got to meet Ali Fratesi and her boyfriend Dustin Pinion, a wonderful young couple who are practicing organic farming. They have apparently liked my art for some time, and finally got a chance to come to a show!

Also saw some old friends such as Tiffany Holder, who drove all the way down from the Smokey Mountains, and Susie McGovern, who now lives in North Carolina. Great to see those crazy chics.

My high school art teacher, Nelle Elam, and her buddy Fay Fisher were there checking out the scene, as was awesome Starkville artist Liz Johnston.

Some of my running buddies made it over for the show including Brent Wallace, Arash Taheri, Jorge Villarreal, Will Kallfelz, and Chad Anderson! Brent and Chad are also artists, so I think they appreciated the show.

Folks seemed to enjoy the art. Many had questions, especially about how I did the color pieces and also how the collaborative works were done. People were super interested in the idea of doing collaborative pieces with other artists from around the world!

Finally left the show just after 8 pm. Took Joseph and Audrey out to eat at Harvey's before heading home! A nice finish to a great evening.

Upcoming Energy Art Show at Meridian Museum of Art and my Subconscious Meandering Show still ongoing

My exhibition entitled "Subconscious Meandering" is still ongoing at the Depot Gallery on the Mississippi State University Campus. The gallery is located above the Welcome Center in the Barnes and Nobles Building beside the Football Stadium. The show will be up through August 31st. The gallery is open from 8 AM to 5 PM Mondays through Fridays.

I have approximately 35 pieces of art in the show including a variety of surreal type drawings and mixed media paintings ranging in size from 8 X 8 inches to 4 X 4 feet. Additionally, some of the artwork includes collaborative works that I have done with several artists from around the world including Bernard Dumaine, Marcel Bakker, Debra Valentine, Gromyko Semper, Janelle McKain, Ben Tolman, Joseph Larkin, Sally Hunter, and Peter Sibrin.

Upcoming Energy Art Show at Meridian Museum of Art

In other art news, the Energy Art Movement of which I am a member will be having a show at the Meridian Museum of Art in Meridian, Mississippi from October 5th through November 26, 2011 with a reception at 7 pm on October 29 with a gallery talk by artists.

The Energy Art Movement was started in May of 2008 by a group of artists collectively interested in raising the standards of artisitic expression. They believe that visual dynamism - "Energy Art" - is a natural evolution of art trends that preceded it, particularly those trends which reflect the complexity of civilization. As technology and science hurtle forward, this international movement holds that art should do more than reflect our surroundings: it should aspire to capture the energetic essence of life.
